Imagine Music Inc. began with Jennifer as a sole proprietor. Twenty-five years later, and a growing teaching staff, Jennifer’s music school earned an undisputed reputation for quality and professionalism in the Calgary music community. Jennifer is a highly respected music teacher, accompanist, contemporary pop and jazz pianist, who plays at many events such as weddings, corporate parties and a variety of private functions.
Jennifer has been embellishing music ever since she was young. Starting on the organ, she quickly learned to chord and orchestrate the many varied sounds and rhythm settings. By the age of 16, she was teaching, using new and creative improvisation techniques with students of all ages. Later, as an adult, she went on to study piano and keyboard and graduating from Mount Royal College with a Diploma in Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance. Jennifer has completed her Grade 8 from the Royal Conservatory of Music and has taught music students of all ages for over twenty-five years.
When she isn’t teaching, Jennifer is active throughout the musical community in Calgary. She is a member of the Alberta Piano Teacher’s Association (APTA) and a clinician running drop-in improvisation piano workshops for the Calgary Arts and Summer School Association CASSA four years in a row. Most of these CASSA piano students are classically trained, but within minutes of being in her class, without any knowledge of their skill levels, Jennifer gets them jamming on acoustic and electric pianos. This year we worked a jazz piece, “Softly as the Morning Sunrise” by Hancock. She enjoys teaching these piano classes immensely!
Teaching on How to Use Your Instrument
Jennifer often instructs on various brands of digital pianos and keyboards. “I teach many piano students how to operate and enjoy their musical equipment. The students have a lot of fun learning their instrument and seeing what it is capable of doing.” Jennifer says. Many people buy these highly functional keyboarding instruments and don’t know how to operate their keyboards or electric pianos to their maximum potential. Consequently, they only use the piano setting and don’t get to enjoy the full capability of these wonderful instruments.

Jennifer’s Approach to Teaching:
Making music your own is an integral part of playing music. Being able to add fill-ins, improvise, interpret, or change your music makes you a more versatile piano player.
Young students need to learn the piano skills that keeps them playing as adults.
Adult students are taught to play piano for enjoyment and relaxation while expanding their physical and mental skills.
Jennifer incorporates music enjoyment for both the player and listener within the piano lesson.
Learning various pianos music styles is of value to the serious piano player.
It is important to recognize the musical skills of the piano student and expand on them.
